Upper St. Clair, Pennsylvania is one of the most beautiful and revered townships in Allegheny County. Known for its gorgeous homes and wealthy population, Upper St. Clair is an ideal place to live for thousands of Pennsylvania residents. In fact, it is estimated that Upper St. Clair is wealthier than 95% of similarly-sized communities in the country.

Situated 8 miles south of downtown Pittsburgh, Upper St. Clair boasts nearly 20,000 full-time residents. However, it was not always the rich, bustling suburban neighborhood that it is today. Nonetheless, Upper St. Clair has a long and storied history as a landmark community in Pennsylvania.

Before it was known as Upper St. Clair, the area was a crossroads that was largely inhabited by Native American tribes of the region. In 1762, John Fife became the first person of European descent to settle in the area and build a permanent home. The township slowly grew throughout the latter half of the 18th Century, eventually becoming one of the first townships included as part of the creation of Allegheny County in 1788.

By the 1830s, the county government decided to split the township, then known simply as “St. Clair,” into two townships: Upper St. Clair and Lower St. Clair. Upper St. Clair retained its identity as a more exclusive community by ensuring its residents had better government services than the more densely populated township of Lower St. Clair. By 1920, Lower St. Clair was broken up into several municipalities of various names, though Upper St. Clair never dropped the “Upper” from its title.

However, the history of Upper St. Clair is far more interesting than the drawing of lines on a map or the naming of municipalities. In 1794, the small population of Upper St. Clair played a significant role in the Whiskey Rebellion, a revolt against government taxes that helped shape U.S. tax law for centuries to come. Decades later, Upper St. Clair created its own regiment that would eventually become part of the Union Army during the American Civil War.

The township prospered over the 19th and 20th Centuries, thanks in part to a series of profitable mines developed in the area. Upper St. Clair’s beautiful landscape also attracted wealthy settlers since its earliest days, entrenching its image as an “upper-class” community in the minds of many Pittsburgh residents. Today, Upper St. Clair continues to see success as a prosperous, perhaps even luxurious community that draws in new residents every year.

Despite the idyllic lifestyle in Upper St. Clair, the community is no stranger to drug and alcohol abuse. These problems have only been exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic and subsequent economic recession. Moreover, the opioid epidemic has affected Pennsylvania more than most other states, and the citizens of Upper St. Clair have not escaped the effects of the ongoing crisis.

Fortunately, Upper St. Clair and the rest of Allegheny County have access to various resources to treat drug and alcohol addiction. In addition to state-run programs, many individuals and families in Upper St. Clair turn to the experts at Prosperity Haven for help. Prosperity Haven has already helped many local patients recover from their substance abuse disorders, making it one of the most popular and successful drug and alcohol rehab cities in the area.

However, it is not enough to know that substance abuse exists in Upper St. Clair. It is also vital to understand exactly how drugs and alcohol affect the residents of the community — and what people can do to help themselves and others reach recovery. So, in today’s guide, we will cover some of the most relevant data points concerning drug and alcohol addiction in Upper St. Clair, Pennsylvania.

The Drug Addiction Crisis in Upper St. Clair

While Upper St. Clair does experience drug incidents and drug-related crime, it is still one of the safest communities in Pennsylvania and even the entire country. According to Crime Grade, Upper St. Clair sees less crime than 81% of U.S. municipalities. This means that the township has just 0.52 drug crimes per 1,000 residents each year. Moreover, the chances of being the victim of a drug crime (or any type of crime) are extremely low in Upper St. Clair. [1]

Due to the low instances of drug crimes in Upper St. Clair, the statistics are difficult to calculate. In fact, most of Upper St. Clair’s drug statistics are rolled into the statistics generated at the city and county levels. As of the latest reports in Allegheny County, the region has seen a continual increase in drug-related deaths since 2018.

As previously mentioned, the issue of overdose deaths in Allegheny County has only worsened during the COVID-19 pandemic. Reports from local authorities indicate that drug overdoses increased from 479 in 2018 to at least 719 in 2021. This reflects an increase of over 50% in deaths in just three years. Just as telling, 80% of overdose deaths in the county involved at least two drugs, and almost 90% involved opioids. [2]

The lack of drug crime in Upper St. Clair indicates that most drug addiction cases in the township involve prescription opioids and/or alcohol. This makes it even harder to track individual cases of substance abuse in the township, as many remain hidden from law enforcement agencies. It can even be difficult for friends and family to know that someone is suffering from this kind of addiction, particularly when any drugs involved are being prescribed by trusted medical professionals.

Upper St. Clair Drug and Alcohol Abuse Vs. the Rest of Pennsylvania

The Pennsylvania Department of Health estimates that 17% of adults in the state report binge drinking alcohol on a regular basis. [3] High rates of binge drinking remain common throughout the state, even in wealthy communities like Upper St. Clair. It is also important to note that the combination of opioids and alcohol can be especially lethal, as it impedes respiration and increases the risk of a fatal overdose.

Looking at the entire state of Pennsylvania, 5,168 people died of accidental drug overdoses in 2021 alone. [4] Allegheny County makes up less than 10% of the population of Pennsylvania, yet it accounts for 14% of the state’s overdose deaths. Fortunately, Upper St. Clair makes up an even smaller portion of these deaths, contributing less than 5 deaths per year (on average).

Substance Abuse Treatment & Prevention in Upper St. Clair

Upper St. Clair has access to state-run substance abuse programs, including the Centers of Excellence for Opioid Use Disorder (COE). However, much of the population of Upper St. Clair opts for private clinics, of which there are dozens within the Pittsburgh city limits and surrounding areas. In recent years, more and more citizens of Upper St. Clair have been referred to third-party rehab centers like Prosperity Haven.

Upper St. Clair, Pennsylvania Addiction Statistics

With a population of nearly 20,000, it is no surprise that Upper St. Clair experiences some instances of drug and alcohol-related deaths every year. However, due to the low crime rate, high-quality medical care, and ease of access to treatment facilities, deaths remain very low in the township. That said, it is far more useful to look at precise statistics when discussing addiction. So, here are a few of the latest and most relevant findings in Upper St. Clair, Pennsylvania:

  • Annual Overdoses: 11
  • Cause of Overdose
    • Unspecified Substances: 37%
    • Illicit Substances: 9%
    • Prescription Drugs: 54%
  • Annual Drug and Alcohol-Related Deaths: 2

Addiction Recovery Rehab in Upper St. Clair, Pennsylvania

Many Pennsylvania residents view Upper St. Clair as the perfect place to live, but that doesn’t mean that the township does not face any problems. Local residents benefit from low crime rates and economic prosperity, but these are not enough to completely stamp out drug and alcohol addiction.
