Acquired by UnitedHealthcare in 2003, Golden Rule Insurance still underwrites individual and family plans, short-term health insurance, certain kinds of extended temporary health insurance, supplemental insurance, and even Medicare Advantage plans for thousands of Ohio residents. As a part of the UnitedHealthcare family of insurance carriers, Golden Rule can provide coverage for certain kinds of addiction treatment, including drug and alcohol rehab. Golden Rule even partners with various private rehab clinics throughout the state of Ohio — including Prosperity Haven — to ensure that you can access the recovery care you need.

In the sections below, we will examine the kind of drug and alcohol rehab available to Ohio residents with a Golden Rule insurance plan.

How Golden Rule Treats Addiction

Even before it was acquired by UnitedHealthcare, Golden Rule did not provide any special resources for people struggling with addiction, and nothing has changed in the years since. Neither Golden Rule nor UnitedHealthcare has any unique programs for substance abuse or addiction treatment, but this is not to say that you’re out of luck when trying to get rehab coverage via a Golden Rule insurance plan. In fact, Golden Rule does offer coverage for inpatient and outpatient rehab in Ohio, though the eligibility requirements can vary from one person to the next.

It’s also important to remember that “coverage” does not mean that you won’t have any out-of-pocket costs. In addition to the monthly or annual premium for your Golden Rule health plan, you’ll also need to meet your plan’s deductible and pay any applicable copays and coinsurances.

Does Golden Rule Cover Rehab in Ohio?

In many cases, Golden Rule will cover the cost of drug or alcohol rehab in Ohio. That said, there is no guarantee that your plan will pay for your treatment. There are a variety of factors that could make you ineligible for coverage, including the type of plan you have and whether or not the clinic of your choice accepts Golden Rule insurance.

That said, if your doctor determines that rehab is the best treatment option for your condition, a Golden Rule health plan will generally recognize it as a “medically necessary” expense that can be partially covered by insurance. If you haven’t already spoken to your primary care physician or a specialist about your addiction, you may need to schedule an appointment so that there is documentation that can be provided to your insurance carrier to ensure maximum coverage.

It’s also important to note that, while Golden Rule does offer some Medicare Advantage and Medicare supplement plans, these are not accepted at most private rehab clinics. You will need to have a private, non-Medicare health plan through Golden Rule to get coverage for rehab. This is why it’s best to contact your insurance carrier before committing to any rehab provider in Ohio.

Does My Health Insurance Only Cover Certain Rehab Facilities?

Most Golden Rule policyholders will find that their health plan only offers coverage for select clinics and providers, and this includes rehabilitation facilities. However, which facilities are covered under your plan will depend on the type of plan you have through Golden Rule. Most Golden Rule individual or family health plans are HMOs, which means that your coverage will only extend to a relatively small network of regional providers. If you want to get treatment at a rehab outside of your network, your HMO plan will not cover it.

However, some Ohio residents can also access HMO-POS or PPO plans through Golden Rule. With these plans, you can get limited coverage for treatment at out-of-network clinics. Just keep in mind that out-of-network care is almost always more expensive, even if your plan does offer this type of coverage.

In short, your Golden Rule health insurance will likely only cover rehab at certain facilities in Ohio, but the amount of coverage you can get and the number of facilities you can choose from will depend on the structure of your plan.
