INTENSIVE OUTPATIENT PROGRAM (IOP)

Whether you choose to begin outpatient treatment after residential treatment or as part of your first line treatment against addiction, outpatient care can be an incredibly effective tool to help recovering addicts manage the challenges of recovery and keep their cravings and old habits at bay while going about their regular lives. Outpatient programs can often be invaluable for recovering addicts, especially in the early months of recovery.

Here are Prosperity Haven, we recommend that people take the time to continue working towards long-term recovery past the extent of their first treatment program. This is because treatment programs are effective at priming a person for the challenges of recovery, but many recovering addicts fail to follow through on these lessons in the months after the program. Additional support, recovery resources, and supplementary programs such as intensive outpatient care can help a recovering addict truly arm themselves against upcoming challenges, including issues with cravings, possible mood swings, different challenges associated with coming back into sobriety, stress related to adjusting to a new lifestyle and working on old relationships, and the stress of maintaining employment in the midst of a fight against addiction.

We at Prosperity Haven aim to present our patients with the best possible repertoire for facing and fighting against addiction. Through an intensive outpatient program, we believe we can continue to provide excellent care and prepare a person for the future.

INPATIENT VS. OUTPATIENT PROGRAMS

Outpatient and inpatient programs are the two primary forms of care in the fight against addition, with one presenting patients with help within a residential setting, while the other one is focused on presenting care and help to patients who do not live in the treatment facility for the duration of the program. Patients in outpatient care often live in sober living homes instead, which are not program-based, and instead provide a drug-free environment to patients to stay as long as they need to.

Others must continue to focus on work or school and utilize outpatient programs as a way to deal with their addiction while maintaining a presence in their usual day-to-day. This is an option for individuals who do not struggle with a severe substance abuse disorder, but still need help to manage and overcome the symptoms of their addiction.

While outpatient programs should ideally not be a person’s first choice of treatment due to the lack of supervision, it is an option for those who absolutely cannot fully commit themselves to a month or more spent in a residential or inpatient setting.

IOP TREATMENT AFTER RESIDENTIAL CARE

Intensive outpatient programs are particularly effective in helping recovering addicts continue to maintain their commitment to sobriety and abstinence in the months following a brief stay at a residential treatment facility. During their time following an intensive outpatient program, recovering addicts should continue to work on the basics of recovery, expanding their toolkit to include methods of stress management, continued therapy, an introduction to further lifestyle changes that can help reduce stress and maintain sobriety, including changes in diet, regular exercise, and sleeping aids.

Outpatient treatment ideally expands upon residential treatment, while focusing on challenges that usually arise within a recovering addict’s first year, but after the initial early recovery stage. Through a comprehensive outpatient program at Prosperity Haven, we hope to provide all our patients with the tools needed to continue their recovery into the long-term.

WHAT MAKES OUR INTENSIVE OUTPATIENT PROGRAM DIFFERENT?

Prosperity Haven’s intensive outpatient program aims to help recovering addicts deal with the various struggles they may encounter in the first year or recovery, including:

Post-acute withdrawal syndrome
Frequent relapses
Powerful cravings
Mood swings
Anxiety issues
And more
Drug use can have an effect on an individual long after the first day of sobriety, and it takes a lot of patience on the patient’s side and a lot of care and compassion on the side of family and friends to overcome an addiction and reach a point of serenity. It’s important to remember that while intensive outpatient programs and other forms of post-residential care are meant to build on a recovering addict’s repertoire, they are not by any means a cure for addiction. Addiction cannot be cured in the short-term, but it can be overcome through a long-term commitment.

AFTER TREATMENT

Inpatient programs are often a continuation on previous recovery programs, but they are far from the end. There is always more to do to further your recovery, including exploring the importance of spirituality in recovery, and further investing in your passions and interests as a way to keep yourself occupied and manage your stress and cravings. It is also advised to continue to visit group meetings, keep in touch with other sober and recovering addicts, and work with community programs dedicated to helping local addicts get the help they need. Surrounding yourself in recovery programs is a best way to maintain your sobriety in the first year, to prevent losing sight or interest in the recovery process.
