Residential Treatment: Different Types, Services, Costs

Residential treatment programs are classified into several types. However, the ever-changing and continuous diversification of the treatment methods and components of individual programs make it difficult to accurately categorize the programs into the traditional classifications for addiction treatment.

It is important to understand the initial steps, which in most cases are detoxification and medically managed withdrawal. Detoxification is the process by which the body rids itself of drugs. The acute and potentially harmful effects of stopping drug use are managed in a well- designed detoxification process. Despite this, the psychological, social and behavioral issues linked with addiction cannot be addressed solely by detoxification, explaining why detoxification hardly ever produces long-lasting changes in the behavior of addicts that are requisite for recovery. This shows the need for detoxification to be followed up by formal assessments and treatment.

Detoxification tends to be accompanied by displeasing side effects resulting from withdrawal that could potentially be fatal. As a result, medications managed and administered by physicians in either in- patient and outpatient settings are incorporated into detoxification. With this in consideration, the process can be referred to as medically managed withdrawal. This process utilizes medicine such as barbiturates, benzodiazepines, opioids, alcohol and other sedatives.

The Cost of Treatment Pales in Comparison to the Cost of Addiction

A person struggling with addiction is always in dire need of professional help. In most cases, this usually is a rehabilitation program. Not all types of treatments plans suit everyone, therefore several options for treatment have been developed. Addiction treatment entails attending counselling and therapy sessions as well supplementary nutritional guidance, yoga, techniques for meditation and mindfulness, exercises and medication for maintenance among other professional services.

The many types of treatment options also have different costs. Treatments plans are either in patient or outpatient plans. The distinctive factor of these two treatment plans is: whether the patient fully resides in the existing environment in an inpatient program through the entire duration of the treatment or if they would wish to remain at home for an outpatient rehabilitation treatment in a part-time fashion.

Different subsets exists within both inpatient and outpatient treatment programs that are helpful in addressing the different needs of different people. This includes their financial situations. Inpatient and outpatient programs can both last from a minimum of 28 days, however longer days that require a minimum of 90 days is recommended by the National Institute of Drug Abuse (NIDA).

Emphasis is put on achieving sobriety and coping skills through either through counselling or therapy or a combination of both. This objective is achieved through:

    • Developing individual-based methods to avoid situations that could expose them to drugs and alcohol.
    • Imparting skills to help people manage their cravings for drugs.
    • Developing a plan to deal with probable lapse or relapse scenarios.
    • Creating an open environment where an individual can feel free to discuss about their personal grievances such as relationships with family or friends, employment situation, or legal issues among others.
    • Incorporating the community (family or friends) in the recovery process.
    • Facilitation of peer groups discussions and learning.

Residential Treatment Programs

Also known as inpatient rehab, residential treatment programs are a considerable efficient option for individuals who have consistent needs for medical assistance to detoxify from substances such as benzodiazepines, alcohol and opioids. The requirement for intensive medical supervision and medication maintenance could be high for individuals with such risk, and it is important to ensure that the tribulations of withdrawal do not push them into relapse. Medical detoxification/ detox is not always available in all residential treatment programs, however, they do accept already detoxed patients.

Residential treatment is effective from the perspective that the various methods used involve removing the addicted individual from the original environment where they have access or face triggers for abuse such as stressful home environments. These could derail a person from their path to recovery. Being surrounded by peers also serves a motivational purpose with the peer support for one another’s recovery. Residential treatment programs also have an edge over outpatient programs because of their direct access to medical professionals, specialized program such as nutrition and therapists, all to help them steer away alcohol and substance abuse.

Costs of Inpatient Rehab

The costs associated with residential treatment vary, depending on the resources and assistance provided in accordance with a specific facility. Various factors influence the cost adjustments of rehabilitation programs, including:

    • Types of treatments offered.
    • Comparison of patient acceptance into a particular rehab center.
    • Amenity offerings.
