Building a Foundation for Addiction Recovery in Chardon, OH

At Prosperity Haven, we understand that addiction recovery is so much more than simply maintaining sobriety — it requires you to take full control of your life. We know that addiction can strip you of the basic developmental opportunities that you need to function and enjoy a “normal” life, depriving you of everyday experiences that others take for granted. Many people in recovery find it unfamiliar and overwhelming, and this is why we’re committed to helping you develop tools and strategies that will help you with our programming as well as outside of our Chardon addiction treatment center.

We want you to succeed, and only treating the physical symptoms of your addiction does not fully prepare you for a lifetime of sobriety. That’s why our Cleveland-area rehab center puts special attention on helping you address the mental and emotional sources of your substance abuse, and in turn, helps develop the life skills necessary to thrive in recovery.

How Life Skills Fit in During Substance Abuse Treatment

Fundamental life skills are the foundation for a successful recovery. In order to manage your daily life, it’s important to understand the basics of caring for yourself and your home. By learning about and performing these responsibilities in rehab, you’ll be able to make an easier transition back to everyday life. In our life skills workshops, we take the time to introduce practical situations in which skills will help you navigate the potential pitfalls in your life, working with your peers to develop and master them.

Along with the stress everyone encounters, like finances, employment, and relationships, we know that you’ll also be dealing with emotions and situations that most people don’t experience in their daily lives. During life skills workshops at Prosperity Haven, you’ll have the opportunity to develop skills that speak directly to recovery and managing reminders of your experiences with substance abuse.

  • Personal Care: Practicing personal care will help you feel better and more confident about yourself. Things such as good hygiene, cooking nutritious meals, exercising regularly, and maintaining a proper sleep schedule are all important to your physical and mental health.

  • Household Responsibilities: Performing tasks such as cooking, cleaning, and doing laundry helps you care for yourself and learn the basics of independent living. These activities will also give you a sense of responsibility and accountability for yourself and to the people with whom you share your life.

During your time at Prosperity Haven, your case manager will help you prepare yourself and even find employment by working with you on professional skills such as building your resume, applying for jobs, interviewing techniques, and more.

Skills for Lasting Recovery

Skills for a Lasting Recovery

Some life skills are more recovery-focused and specific to being able to succeed in rehab and make sobriety last a lifetime. These crucial skills include:

  • Sober Socializing: It’s important that you are able to have a fulfilling social life without being forced to put your sobriety at risk. One of the major life skills we emphasize is deciding who to trust with your well-being and when to walk away from situations that aren’t part of a healthy lifestyle in recovery.

  • Coping Mechanisms: Being able to handle life’s stress and negative circumstances in a healthy way can be difficult when you’re in recovery. We’ll teach you how to manage the daily challenges of life in a constructive, healthy way, rather than through the use of drugs or alcohol.

  • Relapse Prevention: A lot of focus during treatment involves identifying and addressing the root causes of your addiction. Understanding what factors are involved in your decisions to use drugs and alcohol is crucial in learning how to reject those factors after rehab and avoid turning back to harmful substances.

  • Trigger Avoidance: In your day-to-day life, there are going to be people, situations, and places that remind you of your addiction or make cravings stronger than normal. By identifying and managing these triggers, you can feel confident about being strong in the face of potential temptation to use.
